March 17 diary

03-17-2011, 06:27 PM

Butchie is doing pretty good . His order came in time for his 7pm feeding last night and he likes the new nipple. I like the syringes too, cause I can keep them in a mug and switch off pretty fast. He sometimes likes feeding while on his tummy, other times he is propped up. I am a little nervous he hasn't pood since his 5:55am feeding, he has gone almost this long once before. Is that normal? He doesn't look or feel bloated, is peeing fine, and is eating 3 cc's each feeding.

I discovered too the eyedropper I had been measuring food in was not cc sized, so before 7pm yesterday all the cc amounts I thought I was feeding him were actually just a little over half that amount  . But he is now taking (actual) 3cc's each feeding which is every 3 hours. Night sometimes he goes a bit longer (4 or 5 hours), but he is doing well. Stayed at 69 grams this morning (same as yesterday morning), before he was going down about a gram per day. Poor little guy . Hope now he will gain some weight!

He really slurps when he eats, and is wiggly/squirmy. His ears wiggle now when he eats (started doing that a couple of days ago  ) His fur is coming in thicker, and he has longish furs on his tummy. He sometimes grabs the nipple or syringe with his front paws while eating.

I was worried about him yesterday because milk came out his nose. I tilted him, head down, and wiped his nose with a tissue, and he sneezed a bit but his breathing has been normal with no clicking sounds. This happened at his 1:10pm feeding yesterday, two feedings before the new syringes came.

Are they normally pretty vocal at this age? He scolds a bit if he hears something new, and makes snuffling sounds (not sure how else to describe it) while rooting around his blankets when I am getting ready to feed him. Sometimes he does that after he has had his fill, then he falls asleep, sometimes as soon as I set him back in his nest. He will fall asleep in my hand too, curled up tight tight with his little tail over his nose  .

Oh and with his last feeding (4pm), I started the new formula (the 32/40), as per **'s instructions, 1 syringe new formula to 3 syringes old formula and mixed it well. He balked a bit at first ("hey, this isn't what I ordered!") then ate it fine. I am guessing a day or so with each transition, and if no digestive issues move forward? I forget who it was who recommended the 32/40 but I also had ordered the 20/50 just in case. Looks like there are some recipes I can use with the formulas too, to convert him to solid later.

No new photos today (Gasp!! I know, how could I not take pictures?! ), but will try and take at least one a day. I think I have some from yesterday to post.

Thank you all for all your help . Raising Butchie so far (5 days) has been an experience. I am keeping a little journal and when done will add pictures and print it out to keep in a 3-ring binder. Will be a keepsake and who knows may help me ifn I ever find another little tyke. He is good for me; gets me up earlier (now if I would just STAY up, lol). I've been lazy about mornings since losing my job in January, and I like that he helps get me going. He also keeps me busy .

That's how I did it; put all in the same jar then mixed then pulled up in the syringes.

I figured he was behind too with regards to weight. Maybe I should go back to every two hours then. Poor guy, I hope this isn't going to stunt his growth/development permanently.

Ok, so he is probably alright. I am keeping an eye on his breathing and it is quiet and normal.

Exactly! Except I get side tracked on sites like this, and researching things of the future like releasing and cages and nutrition, etc.  Then I end up getting very little done!

Tomorrow will be cold, so I won't be walking dogs or taking turtles outside. Maybe I can catch up on indoor cleaning and critter cages.

Congratulations on your first pinkie of the season !! Boy or Girl? I'd be so nervous with one so young. Glad Butchie is bigger and has fur and all.

Ok, just fed him and he did take 4 cc's but he looks too chubby? Does he look ok to you all?

He did pee, and finally pood (7 tiny little pieces stuck together), and he fell asleep right away but he is sleeping on his tummy, not curled up. 4 cc's wasn't too much for a baby I am guessing is probably 3 to 3 and a half weeks?

Adding a couple more, he is curled up now, maybe I worry too much??

He LOOKS cozy now, at least?

He did finally poo, little tiny pieces all stuck together (seems to be normal for him)

His tummy is soft, not hard. Even now with my most recent "did I feed him too much" anxiety, tummy is soft. But thank you for your post, cause now I know what I need to do ifn it happens again. Glad too, that I am not the only one who worries .

He does still get the cream from the goat formula. Oddly enough, the goat's milk is low fat (Why do they do that?!). Come too think of it, I have never seen full fat goat's milk; maybe they don't make it? The yogurt is full fat (Original vs their low fat and no fat versions). I have a picture of the ingredients used for what he has been taking:

Also, what I HAD been using, before his new syringes and nipples arrived:

These all have since been retired . Note too the large syringe was thoroughly rinsed out to ensure no medication was in it. I believe it was a 5cc syringe.

Oh wow!! Super cute (I like pinkie rodents ) but too tiny for me. Look at all the grey hairs Butchie is gonna give me??  How many days old do you think? Where did he come from? Grey or fox or??

He does pee each feeding. Usually he poos each time too so when he doesn't, well, you know, one more thing for me to worry about . But good to know he is ok in that department too.

Don't know what we would do without you all .

Thank you, **. I am glad to have a place with so many experts who can tell me he is fine .

He IS so cute! I peek at him often just to see him all snuggled up.

Here are yesterday's pictures. He had just eaten and promptly fell asleep after he went potty. Had my phone so snapped some quick before he moved again:

I absolutely LOVE how he is holding his little feet
